Goodreads #1 & #18: Best Books To Read While Travelling: Thank you!

Standard

How incredible! I logged on to Goodreads at the weekend and there they were, sitting pretty: Sleeping People Lie at #1 and The Thinking Tank at #18 on the Best Books To Read While Travelling chart. Smashing news

Top of the Goodreads Best Books To Read While Travelling chart for my book signing at Waterstones, Peterborough!

Top of the Goodreads Best Books To Read While Travelling chart for my book signing at Waterstones, Peterborough!

to tell folks at my book signing in Peterborough last Saturday!

I am delighted that so many of my readers have loved travelling with my novels. I can just see you all, perhaps curled up in front of the fire in a country cottage in Devon or lying toasting on a beach in exotic climes – or maybe just whiling away the hours in an airport or train.

But wherever my books have been your companions, near or far, I just want to say thank you so much for tucking them into your luggage. It’s a great chart to be on, with Paris and New York (as well as good old Stamford, England) the locations for Sleeping People Lie and Rutland, Spain the settings for The Thinking Tank, its lovely to know that travel-minded people have plucked them from the shelves.

My novels are available from Waterstones, in branches and online and from http://www.amazon.com and http://www.amazon.co.uk (where you can check out reviews) in paperback and Kindle formats.

#1 Goodreads ‘Best Book To Read While Travelling’ for Sleeping People Lie!

Standard

IMG_0336Well, I never thought I would see the day when Sleeping People Lie would be nominated for a Goodreads list, let alone be perched at the top, hovering gracefully over such noble companions. Thank you so much to the lovelies who voted for it. I am so aware that these things are as much PR exercises as anything. We authors love to see our books top charts as it spreads the word to others who might consider popping it in their suitcases – so thank you to my supporters too, for every single person who chooses Sleeping People Lie as their holiday companion as a result of your vote. I want you to know how very much your input has been appreciated.

Sleeping People Lie is my second novel. The Thinking Tank (also Summertime Publishing) is a top 50 Bestseller on Amazon, Women’s Contemporary Fiction.

The Secrets of a Successful Portable Career

Standard

When I found myself ‘expatted’ so to speak, my immediate choice was to turn to my two passions – writing and dancing – to create a framework for my new life abroad. But to do that it takes energy, effort, an abundance of patience and above all other people. Without other people, the isolation of a new country, new culture and the reality of the alone-ness of the ‘trailing spouse’ can turn excitement to dread.

Enter ‘A Career In Your Suitcase’ Expat Guru, Jo Parfitt has teamed up with Career Consultant, Colleen Reichrath-Smith to create a go-to guide to help you find your passion and empower you to create a portable career.

Confronting the issues of loss of identity and self-esteem, this guide offers practical advice – not just lists of suggestions, but real and powerful ways of shifting your vision and reaching out to others to forge your own space on the expat arena – a space that can be popped into your suicase and shaken out wherever and whenever the next transfer takes place.

This is the fourth edition of this excellent publication. I got stuck into my dream of writing novels for a living and The Thinking Tank and Sleeping People Lie were born. When I arrived in the top 50 on Amazon I knew that expat miracles certainly can happen.

A Career In Your Suitcase was a friend when I needed it and absolutely worth its weight in my own personal baggage allowance!

Sleeping People Lie steals top spot – with apologies to Jamie O!

Sleeping People Lie & The Thinking Tank steal the top spots at Waterstones!

Sleeping People Lie & The Thinking Tank steal the top spot at Waterstones!

With launch fever over for Sleeping People Lie, I thought that maybe that was that. Written, launched, marketed; over and out.

But no; a great big ‘hurrah’ was just around the corner when Sleeping People Lie AND The Thinking Tank managed to bump Jamie Oliver off the top row, coming in at #1 and #2 respectively following my book signing in Waterstones in Market Harborough.

This last week has been terrific too with books flying out of my hands at signings. Huge thanks to my new readers in Lincolnshire and Rutland. And the best bit of all? The fact that folks came especially to see me because they loved The Thinking Tank and wanted my second novel asap. What a joy and blessing! Although Martin may not think so since it’s made me want to get stuck into novel #3 and that means he has to live with a zombie. Hey ho! Please watch this space…

The Dangerous Art of Channel X

Standard

Picture the scene. It’s late at night and the hotel is all but deserted. It’s like something from an Agatha Christie where you expect to trip over a dead body as you head down the endless corridor, its miserable brown and swirly carpet scuffing beneath your feet.

You press the button and the door swings open, releasing you into the cold, wet night. You cross the damp, bleak car park and hurtle through the revolving door. Once again you hand the code card to the boy behind the desk. He looks menacingly up at you, swipes his Teutonic-perfect blond hair from his eyes, sighs and places another in your sweaty palm. Retreating, you find the elevator, go to the third floor, cross the walkway and slip quietly down the spiral stairs, the only route back in. Once safely in your room, you slide the card home and bingo! It doesn’t work AGAIN. Will you give up and let them take your money? No, you won’t.  You are strong; you are British; your upper lip has never been stiffer – and nor for that matter have your hips. So the cycle begins again. You grab your key and head back down the corridor, resolve your new best friend.

‘Give up,’ said Martin.

‘Never,’ I replied. ‘They know these things don’t work. They just want to take our money and think we’ll be too embarrassed to make a fuss.’

Armed with the knowledge that Martin had already decided that all was lost, my determination redoubled its steely grip. The boy child at reception was not going to win. I was back on the trail.

‘Listen,’ I said, my best expat voice rearing its ugly head as I approached the desk, ‘This is my third circuit. You know and I both know that the tokens from the machine and the tokens you are replacing them with are never going to work. Now, I could run around in circles all night and I am quite prepared to do that, but why don’t you save us both a lot of trouble and just give me back my money?’

Two more circuits and twenty minutes later, that’s just what he did. Surely it should not be this hard to watch a pay-movie?

The name of the hotel? Not telling. Wouldn’t want to spoil your fun!

Sleeping People Lie is OUT NOW on Amazon in Kindle and paperback and is available from Walkers, Waterstones and all good bookshops.

Best selling author of The Thinking Tank

Thank you, Waterstones and the good folk of Eastbourne!

Standard

For the first time last weekend since our launch in Holland, I was signing copies of The Thinking Tank off my home patch. And I really didn’t know what to expect. Eastbourne branch of Waterstones had invited me – and I wanted to do a great job for them. In preparation, they ordered in 20 copies of The Thinking Tank, which is the amount they would expect an author to sign on a good day. I was nervous. What if they’d ordered all those copies and got stuck with them. What then?

There was some concern that their copies might not arrive, so just to be on the safe side, I shoved an extra box of my novels in the back of my car.

Hurrah that I did! I had the most amazing day there and met some incredible folk. Karen, Vicky and her lovely team could not have been more welcoming – and customers found the time to have a chat, sometimes even, when they read the themes of The Thinking Tank, sharing what was on their heart. Thank you, Eastbourne. I now know I can travel far from home in the hope of finding a home from home for my book. Oh, and I sold 56 copies by the way. Thank you to my readers – I am so grateful for your support.

The Thinking Tank #48 Women’s Fiction: Such a blessed week…

Standard

Yes, I know I am supposed to bang on about life’s crappy stuff and how to deal with it, but honestly, can you blame me for wanting just to bask in the loveliness of another day with The Thinking Tank in the Amazon 100 Bestsellers list? How can that possibly be crappy?

Although, ask my husband and it would probably be another story as the poor darling has practically had to make an appointment to catch up with me this week. And bless him, he is being my trusty companion and sherpa for all my book signings at the mo – Eastbourne, Peterborough, Leicester, Bristol, Clapham Junction (fingers crossed), Market Harborough – might just have to write a book about Waterstone branches that I have known and loved…

So I just want to take a moment to thank Martin, Jo, (www.joparfit.com), the charming Renata (www.expatbookshop.com)  and my lovely, supportive friends, family and readers out there who have made this a truly blessed week. And just to celebrate, the wonderful Graham (www.creationbooth.com) has designed some snazzy bookmarks for me to take on my travels – please come and grab one from me!

We all know things can change in a second – so I am grateful for this blink of a moment when I have seen The Thinking Tank graph shooting up and those little numbers on Amazon that say you have made it up their with Chris Cleaves, Jodi Picoult and The Devil Wears Prada!

 Bizarre, blessed and bloody brilliant!

#57 on Amazon Women’s Fiction Bestsellers – definitely NOT life’s crappy stuff!

Standard

Captured on screen at #59!

Last week, when Summertime Publishing named me their Best Selling Author, 2011, I didn’t think the week could possibly get better. But it actually did…

And, OK, Jo Parfitt (www.joparfitt.com), you were right! An author’s ‘backstory’ really does make a difference.

When the Gulf News Friday Magazine published my story by the excellent journalist, Antonia Hoyle (www.antoniahoyle.com), I felt like hiding under the duvet (www.gulfnews.com/life-style/general/belly-dancing-saved-me-from-my-grief-1.960098). I just had this idea that my novel was this separate entity, that needed to be other than me, rather than sharing my history and my sadness. Stupid, I know, when you look at it because what else does an author do other than pour out real emotions, layered onto the characters and their situations? Even so, my novel is fiction and I thought that my ‘backstory’ might somehow infect what I had created. I don’t do ‘poor me’ and anything that smacks of that just doesn’t sit well.

But the support since last Friday has been incredible such that I would never have dreamed possible. Even people from my past have been back in contact. Then, on Sunday afternoon, The Thinking Tank went to #57 on Amazon Women’s Fiction. Extraordinary. Me, on Amazon’s Top 100 Bestsellers’ list? 23 places ahead of Costa Coffee Shortlister, Chris Cleave, and only 37 places behind the wonderful Jodi Picoult. That is just bonkers.

So, Jo was right, I was wrong. There. I’ve said it.

And a great big stonking THANK YOU to everyone who has been in touch. There are comments on the Friday magazine article – but most have come via FB messages or email. To know that my story has made a difference, to know that it has helped some of you who are bereaved take a baby step forward – that is huge.

As to the ratings – what an amazing blessing from the universe…
